Let’s use a client experience from the trail as an example throughout this step. It’s the most powerful lesson of boundary setting I’ve had within the Grand Canyon. The learning was multifaceted, and it started with a woman accidentally dropping her phone down an embankment.

Having set out after breakfast to hike a few miles on the Clear Creek Trail, we stopped at a vista providing a view of Phantom Ranch below. It was a warm day, we had just completed most of the climb in elevation, and we were in good team spirits. Suddenly I heard a scream and all sorts of commotion. “Sara, we need help.” I turned to find a client frantically wanting to reach her phone, which had dropped below her and was positioned by a small tree. She looked desperate. Others in our group held her back as she and I assessed the situation.

Sitting with my client on a rock, I calmed her down and asked her why the phone was so important. She told me about pictures she’d taken with her son that weren’t backed up on iCloud or her computer. As a mother, I understood her need to retrieve the device, which to be fair, I easily could have done. But we weren’t doing so while in a stressful situation. She became furious as I explained that her feelings were valid, but her safety came first. I could feel her resistance to the boundary I had set when she asked, “Can I please get it? Nothing is going to happen to me!” and I replied, “No.”
